In te reo Māori, family terms are very specific. Teina refers to a younger sibling of the same gender, while tuakana refers to an older sibling of the same gender. Tungāne is used for a brother of a female, and tuahine for a sister of a male. These terms can also extend to cousins, with teina and tuakana describing cousins of the same gender from junior and senior lines within the whānau, and tungāne and tuahine describing male cousins (of a female) and female cousins (of a male).
